Why Know The Bible - Benefits?

If you have spent any time in our church, you will consistently hear that you need to read your Bible.  Pastor Tim’s sermon last week was all about the Bible and how, like a good diet, is beneficial to you.  But, why is the Bible so beneficial?

It sanctifies
·         John 17:17 ESV
‘Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.’
·         What is sanctifying?
o   It’s means gradually becoming holy, or like Jesus
·         How does the Bible play into this?
o   It is God’s word
o   A ‘saved’ person has the Holy Spirit acting as a counselor
§  Like conscience turned up
o   The counselor ‘lights up’ the words you need to read
§  **Example of verses at retreat**
It’s profitable
·         2 Timothy 3:16-17 HCSB
All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
·         What is profitable?
o   ** Example of free money @HiddenCash **
o   ‘People stand in line for some free’ – Steve Harvey
·         The ultimate instruction manual
o   Teaching – Do it this way
o   Rebuking – Don’t do that
o   Correcting – Do this not that
o   Training in righteousness – Here’s how to do it
·         Why don’t we seek something that’s so worthwhile?

It’s will prolong your life
·         Proverbs 3:1-2,6 NIV
My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years…in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight
·         How can it prolong your life?
o   ** Example Doing dumb stuff because I didn’t listen **
o   It’s much harder to learn from experience
·         It’s building your house on the rock
o   Matthew 7:24-27
o   **Surviving Hurricane Ike pic**

Welcome To Our LifeGroup

Do you like to eat?  Do you want to learn more about what the Bible says?  If your answer is YES to both, then this LifeGroup is for you!  Our group is called ‘Breaking Bread & The Book’ and is all about better understanding the word of God while hanging out & eating.  We will meet at the church & eat dinner while we talk about what the Bible actually says.  We will get grounded on the things important to living the Christian life.  It’s a great opportunity to fellowship and learn about the Word of God.  Plus it’s one less night you have to deal with dinner for the family!
